Ing. Alfred Chinbuah is a Ghanaian and holds a Master of Science in Public Health from University of South Wales, UK, a Bachelor of Education degree and a Diploma in Religious Studies from the University of Cape Coast, and a NEBOSH International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. He is a professional Fireman, a certified OH&S Management systems practitioner, Quality management system Lead Auditor and a First Aid Tutor of St. John Ambulance.
In 1994, Alfred was offered a scholarship to undertake a study in fire detection systems and upon successful completion, was awarded a Commonwealth Fire Engineering Diploma by the Institution of Fire Engineers, UK. Again, in that same year, Alfred undertook a short course in Fire Science and Investigations at the University of Edinburgh and was awarded a Fire Investigations Diploma.
Starting off in 1990 as a Safety professional in a Ghana’s mining industry where the concept of health and safety was relatively unknown, l was able take Teberebie Goldfields Ltd, Tarkwa, Ghana to achieve 545 days without a Lost Time Incident.
Through a short course that he developed and taught a Health and Safety short course with a Professor Amegbey from 2000-2009, which programme has been elevated to a full-time programme at University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa, Ghana.
He was able to establish and implement health and safety management at Gold Fields Tarkwa mine which was aligned and certified to OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety thus becoming the first company within the Gold Fields group and among the mining companies in Ghana to achieve that certification in 2005. Indeed, I was the first Health and Safety Manager for Gold Fields Ghana, Tarkwa mine having successfully set up the health and safety department and a hygiene laboratory, the first of its kind in the mining industry in Ghana. He served as the subject matter expert on fire and undertook several audits of the operations in Ghana, South Africa and Australia.
In 2009, The Sadiola and Yatela mines in Mali (part of AngloGold Ashanti mines) had their OHSAS 18001 certification suspended, l was able to re-engineer the health and safety management systems and eventually helping the companies to have their certificates restored within six months.
In 2010, AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. OHSAS 18001 certification had expired, and l was able to re-tool the health and safety management system in my capacity as the Divisional Safety Manager for West Africa leading to a successful re-certification in the same year.
Alfred was appointed as the Health and Safety Manager of Newmont Goldcorp Corporation, Ahafo mine from November 2011 to May 2018 and helped in improving the health and safety performance significantly.
In November 2006, l was invited by National Safety Council in the US to speak at its 94th Congress on the topic, “The Challenges of Implementing OHSAS 18001”. Being the first African to speak at that high level, he was able to discharge myself creditably with an approval rating of 60% from the participants. I have since 2015 to date been a speaker at the annual Ghana Extractive Industry Health and Safety Conference. I have spoken the 4th Health and Safety Global Forum in Mining in South Africa in 2014, Mining Summit Africa Conference in South Africa in 2015 and had previously spoken and chaired a session at Occupational Health and Safety Conference in South Africa, an event organized by Gold Fields Ltd.
In March 2020, Ing. Alfred was inducted into Ghana Institution of Engineers as the first Fire Engineer in Ghana.
In December 2014, Ing. Alfred was enstooled as the occupant of the Nkodwo Stool as the Santanhene of Akyem Bosome traditional area under the stool name Obrempong Obeng Apea lll.
Alfred voluntarily retired in 2018 but took up appointment as Environment, Health and Safety Manager for Mensin Gold Bibiani Mine and in February 2024, the parent Asante Gold Corporation appointed him as the Group Health and Safety Consultant.
In 2022, l was elected a Fellow of the West Africa Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, a fellow of International Institute of Risk and Safety Management, UK and appointed as NEBOSH Examiner.
In December 2022, Alfred was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 8th Ghana Mining Industry Awards. In September 2024, he was honoured with the Distinguished Service to Safety Award by the National Safety Council in USA.
He is married to Mrs. Araba Ahima Chinbuah with three children.
